Atorvastatin Calcium

Atorvastatin belongs to a group of medicines called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, or statins. It works by blocking an enzyme that is needed by the body to make cholesterol, so this reduces the amount of cholesterol in the blood.
Key Properties:
  • Chemical Name:  calcium [(3R,5R)-7-[2-(4-fluorophenyl)-5-isopropyl-3-phenyl-4-(phenylcarbamoyl)-1H-pyrrol-1-yl]-3,5-dihydroxyheptanoate]
  • CAS Number: 134523-00-5
  • Molecular Formula: (C33H34FN2O5)2•Ca
  • Molecular Weight: 558.64 g/mol
  • Appearance: Atorvastatin Calcium API is generally a crystalline white to off white powder.
  • Solubility:  Atorvastatin Calcium API is less soluble in water
  • Mechanism of Action: Atorvastatin API competitively inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate, a key step in cholesterol biosynthesis.
  • Bioavailability: Atorvastatin API has poor solubility in water and gastrointestinal fluids, which limits its absorption from the digestive tract.
  • Half-life: The half-life of Atorvastatin API is approximately 14 hours.
  • Metabolism:  Atorvastatin API is metabolized by the liver, primarily via the CYP3A4 enzyme.
  • Uses: Atorvastatin Calcium API  is commonly used to lower bad cholesterol levels (LDL-C) and fats (triglycerides) in the blood. It also increases good cholesterol levels (HDL). Improving your cholesterol levels helps decrease your risk of heart disease, stroke, and heart attack.
